Testing a vehicle’s braking performance is a really important part of the annual test. So, the DVSA are reminding all operators to bring their vehicles to test with a load.

You should get your HGV or trailer’s brakes tested by a roller brake tester (RBT) at least 4 times per year, including at the MOT.

Your vehicle must be loaded for a brake test - ideally to at least 65% of its total maximum weight. It can only be tested unladen if it cannot be loaded due to design limitations or the type of load it normally carries.

You can supply the load yourself or the Authorised Testing Facility (ATF) may be able to supply ballast for you. There may be a charge for this, so it is best to check with the ATF first.
