Choosing a Vehicle Operators’ Licence
To operate any vehicle over 3.5 tonnes gross plated weight or (where there is no plated weight) an unladen weight of more than 1525KG to transport goods for hire and reward or in connection with a trade or business, you will need to have an operators licence in place, which is issued by the office of the Traffic Commissioner.
The operators licence should be applied for in the name of the person, company or partnership that is the ‘user’ of the vehicle. The user of the vehicle is to be considered as:
You are the driver and owner of the vehicle; or
it is in your lawful possession under an agreement for hire, hire purchase or load; or
the driver is your employee or agent (i.e. you pay them to drive the vehicle for you).
